• SOLD Antique 18ct Gold Elephant Hair Hoop Earrings

This item is out of stock

A lovely and unusual pair of earrings from the turn of the last Century, c1890s. The earrings are made from elephant hair and 18ct gold with 9ct gold post fittings, a replacement to the originals. They have a smaller hoop suspended within a large hoop and are clasped at the top by their gold fixtures.

Elephant hair jewellery has been around for centuries and originated as part of African mythology. The strong hairs fall out of the elephant's tails often and are collected to make jewellery; a practice that has continued until the present day. The wearer of these jewels is said to encourage love, be given strength and to ward off potential sickness. These hoops have a lovely presence in the ear and are fairly lightweight making them very comfortable. Antique elephant hair jewellery is very collectible and has become a popular genre.
