• SOLD Victorian Diamond Crowned Heart Ring

This item is out of stock

A stunning ring from the early Victorian period, c1840s. The ring is Dutch in origin and has an original silver top set with an encapsulating foil backed pear shaped diamond. The diamond is a rose cut diamond and represents the heart, atop of which is a five point crown. The crowned heart symbolises 'ruler of my heart' and is a wonderful romantic emblem. Possibly, the two curved designs at the bottom of the ring could be described as snakes, the symbol of everlasting love during this period.

I believe the shank to this ring dates later than the top and was probably replaced in the late Victorian period, possibly due to wear. It has repoussé work all around, customary of these designs, and is in excellent condition. There is a later hallmark to the shank due to the fact that any jewellery item offered for sale in The Netherlands must be hallmarked. This has led to later hallmarks being added to antique jewellery and you will sometimes find an older Dutch piece of jewellery with a more modern hallmark.
