Edwardian Silver Banana Scent Bottle
An absolutely incredible scent bottle from the early 20th Century, dated Birmingham 1905. The bottle is made from sterling silver with full English hallmarks and a prominent maker; Levi & Salaman, who first registered in the Victorian period and were known for their quality novelty items. This particular scent bottle is a rare example and is in the shape of a banana. The banana first came to British shores in the 1600s, but wider awareness of the fruit did not come until the end of the 19th Century when regular imports came from the Canary Islands. They represented sunshine and luxury and were deemed to be an exotic food.
This beautiful item opens on a hinge and has a screw top inside where scent would have been added. The top closes securely and the banana hangs in place perfectly. It is a lovely large size and makes a fabulous statement.
The chain pictured is for display only.
