Georgian Carnelian Earrings
A pretty and simple pair of earrings from the Georgian period, c1820s. The earrings are made from solid 9ct gold and have dormeuse fastenings. The term dormeuse translates from French to ‘sleeper’ as these earrings were to be worn whilst you slept to keep the piercings open. They have simple closed back pinched collet settings with beautiful cabochon carnelians set within. The carnelian is a lovely burnt orange colour and the dome of the cabochon allows the light to glow through.
The two earrings are slightly different in size and, I believe, were originally made this way. In fact, the angle of one photo makes this size difference look substantial, though actually from the front it is only very marginal; one cabochon is higher domed than the other. I love this anomoly and feel it only adds to their charm and beauty. They have back to front fastenings meaning that you feed the earring in from the back of the lobe. These seem to go through with ease and sit comfortably in the ear.
