Georgian Carnelian Scallop Shell Pendant

A wonderful pendant from the early 19th Century, c1820s. The pendant is carved from carnelian and has the look of a scent bottle, though the cap is firmly shut and it is worn as a pendant only. The carnelian has been carved to resemble a scallop shell, said to be a symbol of fertility. The carving is exquisite and the carnelian is a wonderful, vibrant orange. The cap of the pendant is 9ct gold.

The chain pictured is for display only. Please note, the bail on the pendant is fairly narrow allowing for a jump ring of no more than 3mm on a chain.
