Regency Bi-Colour Gold Chalcedony Cross Pendant
What a beautiful pendant this is! It dates to the early 19th Century and is from the Regency period. It is very representative of pieces from this time in its style and use of bi-colour gold. It is made from 18ct gold and has the most exquisite cannetille detail throughout with little pansies at the base of each of the four arms of the Maltese cross. The pansies exhibit the use of rose and yellow gold and are beautifully made. The bail also has elements of rose gold amongst the decoration.
The cross shape is made with white chalcedony and the gemstones have a beautiful translucency. At the centre is a square of beautiful natural pearls with a little glass locket compartment. The locket compartment is larger to the back and has the original bevelled glass. Beneath the glass is some woven hair. This could be removed by a professional jeweller if required, though in my opinion, this particular piece is lovely in its original state. It can be worn as a brooch or a pendant and is a true beauty.
Details:
Materials - 18ct Gold (tested), White Chalcedony, Pearls
Age - C1820s
Size - The cross measures approx 38mm in diameter. It is around 49mm long including the bail.
Condition - Very good. The cannetille is in excellent order. There is evidence to suggest that each of the chalcedony settings has been reinforced with a little glue. This is not at all obvious and only visible on much closer inspection. One very tiny chip to the edge of one chalcedony, noted for accuracy only.
Weight - 15.9g
