A wonderful and unusual locket from the late Victorian period, c1890s. The locket is made from 9ct gold with a high carat wash that has a pretty rosy hue, and has beautiful engraved detail to the front depicting motifs from nature with flowers and trees, and a little contrast of a geometric pattern in the top left corner. At the centre is an applied butterfly in flight, which is in a more yellow contrasting gold. The locket has a lovely hidden hinge, always a mark of quality and attention to detail. Inside there are two oval frames that can be removed to place your own photos behind. To the back, a name has been engraved and I believe it reads ‘Hogarth Blackfurl’ in a cursive script. This is very faint and can only be read in certain lights. A truly lovely and unusual piece.
