Victorian Bohemian Garnet Circle Locket

sold out

A pretty locket from the Victorian period, c1880s. The locket is made from ‘garnet gold’, which is a very low grade gold that was used with this type of bohemian garnet. The gold is mixed with other metals and is likely to be no more than 4ct gold; it actually appears as a fairly dull silver overall. This particular locket is a beautiful example of this style of jewel with rich red garnets set throughout. The garnets are in overall good condition and faceted to the top, more like a rose cut, which allows for a vivid play of light through the stones. It has its original bail.

The locket opens on a hinged door to the back and has space for a single photo. There is currently a piece of opalescent backing in the locket, which has a very pretty appearance through the clear covering. The locket will come on a 14kt gold fill chain similar to the one pictured. This locket should be worn with care.
