Victorian Grand Tour Souvenir Ring

A fabulous piece of history from the mid Victorian period, c1860s. This is an eternity ring with a difference. There are seven cameos set in individual settings to create the ring. The cameos are a mix of lava, shell and coral creating an interesting and eclectic mix. They are carved in high relief and depict various male and female faces. The darkest black cameo is particularly striking.

The Grand Tour was a popular pursuit made more so by the invention of steam powered transport, thus opening Europe up. Aristocrats would embark on a journey throughout Europe often ending in Italy, where this piece was likely made. They would hope to come back from their journey with a wider knowledge of art, politics and language and this would have been a souvenir from the trip, likely for a female due to the smaller size.

The cameos are set in silver and the carving is still in excellent condition with only a little wear to some commensurate with age. These rings should definitely be worn with care. It would make a lovely alternative pendant too. Chain pictured is for display only.
