Victorian Heart & Hand Ring with Garnets
A pretty and unusual ring from the Victorian period, dated Birmingham 1873. The ring is made from 9ct gold and is a lovely delicate piece. It has a heart at the centre, which is decorated with three cabochon garnets as well as seed pearls and a turquoise. This is an unusual combination, though the settings are so perfect for the stones that they look to be original. The shoulders of the shank have two perfectly formed hands with textured detail to their surface. The hand and heart motif is known as a fede ring, where two hands either hold a heart or cover one over and it is said to be for a betrothal, love or friendship.
There is some evidence of soldering on the inner shoulders of the shank at the cuffs of the hands, making me feel that the shank could be a replacement to the original, though the style and date of the ring would be similar and it is likely this was done in antiquity. There is also some minor colour variation in the gold at this point. This ring should be worn with care due to the nature of the stones and their settings.
