Victorian Paste Brooch

£75.00

A beautiful quality brooch from the early Victorian period, c1840s. The brooch is made from solid silver and has a gold pin, which tests as around 12ct gold. To the front there is a ‘grid’ of beautiful clear paste stones. The paste are old cuts and have high, small tables with many facets around the edges allowing the light to play on the surface of the paste. To the back, the settings are closed back and square in shape. The brooch is in all original condition and is a super example.

Paste was highly popular during this period and is a type of reinforced glass used to imitate diamonds. Often, ladies would have their real jewels copied in paste to allow them to wear them out and avoid theft.
