Victorian Protection Amulet Seed Pendant
A lovely and unusual seed pendant from the Victorian period, c1890s. The pendant is likely a souvenir from an exotic journey. This was a time when the Victorians were discovering other parts of the world with the increase in the possibility to travel. These seeds are found in South East Asia and Africa and are called Abrus Precatorius. They tend to be a lovely red colour with a black area. This particular seed is fairly equal in the colour split and the red has such a lovely vibrancy. They are said to be worn for protection and ward off evil spirits, though their alternative name is Rosary Pea indicating that they have also been used in prayer. This seed has 18ct gold fittings and is a lovely example due to its slightly larger than usual size.
The chains pictured are for display only.
