Victorian Turquoise Heart Locket

sold out

A pretty locket from the Victorian period, c1890s. The locket is made from solid 9ct gold and is a beautiful heart shape. The heart has a pretty scalloped edge; an unusual design feature that gives this heart a little difference. At the centre front is a turquoise gemstone and a little lace style engraving around the edge. The locket has a frame inside that allows you to place your own photo behind.

Originally this would have had a high carat gold wash on the outside, though this has faded in places with age. The locket bears an engraved ‘15ct’ mark on the back, though this has been done later and is incorrect. The wash was likely 15ct, but the locket itself is 9ct. There is a remnant of a mark that I believe said ‘Real Gold’, readable from inside the locket. This mark was seen occasionally in the late Victorian period, and is most often used on 9ct gold. The locket has been acid tested carefully to verify its gold content.

The locket will come on a 14kt gold fill chain similar to the one pictured.
