Vintage Niello Compass Pendant
A lovely pendant from the first half of the 20th Century. The pendant is a seemingly working compass, which sits in a niello and silver setting. Niello is a black compound of sulphur with silver, lead or copper to create a black alloy that contrasts beautifully with silver. You often see the two together in a checkerboard effect, as is shown here, or as stripes. I love how this pendant looks with the niello checkerboard pattern facing out allowing the compass to remain a secret.
The chains pictured are for display only.
